River Traders And Whanganui Farmers Market
Whanganui's Market by the River
An historic element of early Whanganui is re-enacted each Saturday morning as stalls are set up alongside the downtown reaches of the Whanganui River at the River Traders And Whanganui Farmers Market, ready for a busy mornings trading! Fast becoming known as one of the best in New Zealand, as many as one hundred stalls combine to ensure a diverse range of products are on show.
Appropriately named River Traders And Whanganui Farmers Market, this popular weekend attraction is located in an area of riverbank recorded in history as a busy riverside trading site for local Maori, and recognising this, the access to the area was named by early European settlers as Market Place.
Incorporating the Whanganui Farmers Market alongside an eclectic mix of items. Today shoppers can buy colourful art and craft, fresh garden plants and products, mouth-watering home baking and preserves, flavour-filled organic fruit and vegetables and a range of other goods. Every Saturday, rain or shine.
A portable kitchen and campervan, a couple of foodies, and a master plan: to show the people of this beautiful nation the seasonal food found in their location.
While at the River Traders And Whanganui Farmers Market, experience the river travel with the iconic paddle steamer, undoubtedly the most authentic way to experience Whanganui River’s scenery. Salvaged from the bottom of the Whanganui River where she sat for 50 years, the Waimarie Paddle steamer was restored to her former glory and re-launched in 2000 to make her New Zealand’s only authentic coal fired paddle steamer operating from the golden river boat era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
