One of Whanganui’s premier parks, Virginia Lake Whanganui (Rotokawau) offers a range of activities including a 25 minute woodland walk around the lake. The birdlife, both on and around the water, is a major attraction and this is complemented by an aviary.
One of the beautiful attractions at Virginia Lake Whanganui is the Higginbottom Fountain, which is lit at night and gently changes between colours.
The Winter Gardens is an all-year-round attraction with colourful displays whatever the season or weather. Entry is FREE and hours of operation are Monday to Sunday from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Adjoining the Winter Gardens is the Art Garden which combines an intriguing blend of sculpture and garden art. Please note Dogs are not allowed in Virginia Lake.
Funky Duck Café operates out of Virginia Lake Reserve. Its opening hours are Monday to Sunday from 10:00am to 5:00pm and they can be contacted on +64 6 348 4799.
Add in a children’s playground and this makes Virginia Lake (Rotokawau) one of Wanganui’s most popular attractions. There are three public toilets located at Virginia Lake (Rotokawau). The toilet in the Winter Gardens opens at 7:15am. Toilets are also located on the west side of the lake and on the city side of the lake. These are open 24 hours.
If you are travelling in a self-contained campervan, Babbage Place car park near Virginia Lake is a great camping site for overnighters. Enjoy the lovely view of the Higginbotthom Fountain and experience the quiet atmosphere around you!
Have a bit more time in your hands! Why not visit the Windermere Berry Farms just 5 minutes north of Wanganui on the Wanganui-New Plymouth main highway. Growing berry fruit and produce for over 50 years. Go out to Windermere for freshly picked berries, a range of frozen berries, or delight the children with Pick Your Own. Visit the farm shop and cafe and be tempted by the tasty brunch and lunch selections, or cool off with a real berry ice-cream or sundae.
