Bason Botanic Gardens
Wide open spaces, free gas BBQ facilities and attractive environment.
Set rurally 11kms from the centre of Whanganui, Bason Botanic Gardens covers 25 hectares and is rated a “Garden of Significance” by the New Zealand Gardens Trust. The gardens have developed since 1971 and various forms of unique architecture and art have become a feature.
It includes one of the most extensive public garden orchid collections in New Zealand and heritage brick conservatory architecture.
The history of Bason Botanic Gardens is that of a magnanimous gift from Stanley and Blanche Bason to the Wanganui City in 1966. Initially living off the land, this couple had a good vegetable garden, orchard, plenty of ducks, pheasants and pukeko and watercress from the creek. As their farm become more profitable following World War II, they were able to develop the Homestead and English Garden into almost an acre of camellia, roses, delphiniums, a scented garden and more.
The Bason Botanic Gardens Homestead sits within the Dress Circle of the gardens with a Canary Island Dragon Tree, a massive Chilean Coconut Palm and an Herb Garden overlooking the lakeside areas below. Other areas are the Millennium Hill, Lakeside Flats, Native Bush and Wetlands and the Woodlands.
The Daffodil Hill is a mass of gold in spring coupled with a carpet of bluebells under the Eucalypts past the Gazebo. The Californian pines boast the largest pinecones of all the species and weigh in at 1 to 2 kg per cone and October spoils us with colourful azaleas and rhododendrons.
Families of all ages enjoy spending time at the Bason Botanic Gardens Reserve making use of the wide open spaces, free gas BBQ facilities and attractive environment. The reserve is also able to be driven around making it an easy outing for those with limited mobility.
Open daily from 8:00am until dusk, there are extensive plantings of native and exotic trees and the Bason Botanic Gardens are popular for wedding ceremonies.
The conservatories are open daily from 9:00am to 4:30pm. Picnic areas and a number of walking trails make this is a great family place.
